Yesterday, we woke up to the sound of trees
falling. Massive firs, a hundred feet tall, raining down in
chunks as big around as my kick drum and making nearly the same
thud when they hit the startled grass. Imagine being an
earthworm under that grass!

Yesterday, serendipity sang for us and we sang back: we stopped in
for lunch at
The
Grill on Broadway in Capitol Hill and while eating a red bean
burger, pine nut quesadillas and sweet potato fries, saw a sound
engineer setting up. We asked him when the show started and he told
us a talent show was scheduled that night. "You should come play,"
he said. We did, and it was an amazing night, hosted by the
legendary Drag Queen, Mama Tits. Our competition, brilliant and
brave, included a Drag Queen who stapled money to her flesh using a
huge staple gun and an impressive indie songwriter. We sang a
stripped down version of four songs (no foot drums, just gitjo and
guitar and tambourine) and won the first round! Join us Sept. 21 for
the finals, and hopefully our band will join us. And if you haven't
yet been to
The
Grill on Broadway, you owe it to yourself. Sit in the back,
under the live trees... |

Last weekend we played a show at Cape Disappointment State Park,
though the rain and sea-spray might have ended it. Just as we were
about to fold our wet instruments back in their cases, a man in the
audience yelled, "I have a tent! I will get you a tent!" And here it
is. Bless the hundred or so souls who sat in the rain and listened
through an hour and a half show. We slept in the lighthouse keepers
house. |

In the wake of several full band shows, we took to the streets of
Pioneer Square for Nord Alley's First Thursday Art Walk and played
in an amazing cobblestone and brick corridor. Then we rolled over
the mountains to the blazing, high desert of Yakima where we played
our hottest show ever, at 103 degrees in the shade. At one point, in
a new song, Wolff sang "Wildfires" instead of "Wildflowers" but no
one seemed to notice. It was so hot that the civil war actors who
frequent the festival refused to march when we played "Jennie
Hodgers." We played it anyway. |

Somehow, we have made it to mid-June, and our drummer and bass
player have added mysterious new thunder to our sound, like the
echoes from a hollowed redwood log being thumped by a tribe of
ghosts.
We've made so many old friends new again by spending time sharing
our voices, our stories, even our sleep. From the leaky raft of a
blow-up mattress to the overlooked fiddle left out near the
mountains, we have been adding new stars to the constellation of
Seattle and you, reading this, are also shining in our unified sky.

From our basecamp in the shadows of Hurricane
Ridge on the Olympic Peninsula in the spectacular state of
Washington, we’ve been sleeping in a motorcoach, singing beside a
woodstove in a steel cave and roaring off to play shows in a 1983

across Puget Sound on two ferries and played at a magical resort
called Doe Bay on Orcas Island.

Winterlings - The Animal Groom
This is a lovely blend of lush
contemporary atmosphere and
traditional sensibility from the duo
of Amanda Birdsall and Wolff Bowden.
While the reverb creates big spaces,
fiddles, banjos and bagpipes take us
back in time. The lyrical content
gives us a lot to chew on. In “The
Postman,” full of stark beauty,
Wolff sings: Yes I’m just a postman
/ I’ve been working all my life /
Come wind, come snow, come rain,
come heartbreak hurricane / I’m on
my way. The burr in Amanda’s voice
is accented by a deliberate
stutter-step in her delivery. Akin
to Buffy Sainte Marie’s vibrato, it
might be distracting from another
singer, but here it works
beautifully. We look forward to
hearing more from them. ~Acoustic

Five hour snow drive to Donegal, PA, nearly running out of gas while
lost in the mountains. Played a show with Amanda on violin again
after 3 months break and she played gorgeously while her nephew was

guy's honor. Ate pan roasted Salmon with artichoke risotto. Drove to
Downtown Pittsburgh and sold six paintings (4 Amanda's, 2 Wolff's)
at midnight to a collector who is getting married tomorrow night.

Gene Shay is not only a grandmaster DJ, but also hilarious. We
talked a bit about our banjitar, a camel and an oasis where folks

played the studio version of his favorite, "Take Give." We then

This morning we found out that our song “Take
Give” was played during a live on-the-air Radio Wedding at WMNF in
Tampa. The vows may have followed the lyrics of the song:“If I
walked across the sea, would you walk along with me?” Sounds like a
fine romantic question to ask, steeped with philosophical and
metaphorical possibilities. Much better than “for richer or for
poorer” because if you walk across the sea, you won’t be able to
carry anything but love or you’ll sink. And to Winterlings, richness
is the enjoyment of a long walk with the one you love across a sea
or a forest or the wide, bright island of life. |
